Transferring a Domain Away from Landingsite

Section titled “Transferring a Domain Away from Landingsite”

If you bought your domain through Landingsite and want to move its registration to another registrar, you can start that yourself from your Landingsite dashboard. You do not need to contact support first.

Go to your domain’s page in the dashboard and open the Transfer tab. It has two separate sections:

  • Nameservers — keep the domain registered here, but point DNS at your own provider. See Using Your Own Nameservers.
  • Transfer to another registrar — move the registration itself somewhere else. That is what the rest of this page covers.

Only domains registered through Landingsite have these controls. If you bought the domain elsewhere, its registration and nameservers are managed at that registrar, not here.

  1. Open your domain’s Transfer tab and find Transfer to another registrar.
  2. Click Unlock and show transfer code.
  3. Type transfer to confirm.
  4. We unlock the domain at the registrar and show you its transfer code (also called an EPP code or authorization code), with a copy button.
  5. Give that code to your new registrar and start the transfer there.

We do not store the code. If you lose it, reveal it again from the same page.

Anyone with that code can move the domain, so treat it like a password. The domain stays unlocked while the transfer is pending.

ICANN does not allow a domain to be transferred to another registrar within 60 days of registration. If your domain is inside that window, the Transfer tab shows the date it becomes eligible instead of the button.

The same 60-day lock can apply after a recent transfer in from another registrar, or after certain contact-information changes. If the registrar refuses to unlock the domain, we show you its reason directly.

  • Your website, DNS, and email keep working normally. Revealing the code does not take anything offline.
  • We check every few hours to see whether the transfer has completed.
  • The Transfer tab shows Transfer in progress with an option to cancel.

Transfers usually complete within a few days. The exact timing is controlled by your new registrar and by the confirmation emails it sends to the domain’s contact address, so check your inbox (and spam folder) for anything asking you to approve it.

Once we detect the domain has left our registrar account:

  • Renewal billing for the domain stops automatically. Any domain renewal subscription is cancelled at the end of its current period.
  • The domain becomes a third-party domain in Landingsite. It stays listed on your account, and if it is still pointed at Landingsite DNS your website keeps working.
  • We email you to confirm.

You do not need to do anything to stop the billing. It happens on its own.

Click Cancel transfer (re-lock domain) on the Transfer tab. We re-lock the domain at the registrar so no new transfer can be started.

Re-locking is not a guarantee. If your new registrar has already submitted the transfer, it may still go through, so we keep watching the domain for a couple of weeks afterwards and will stop billing if it does complete.

We pause new renewal charges and renewal reminders for up to 30 days after you reveal a transfer code. Billing resumes if you cancel the transfer, or if the transfer never completes within that window — we are still the registrar until it does, and we still pay the renewal ourselves.

Because of that, if your domain’s renewal date falls during a transfer, an existing renewal subscription can still charge you before the transfer finishes. That charge is not refunded automatically. Contact support and we will refund it.

Transfer to Your Own Name.com Account Instead

Section titled “Transfer to Your Own Name.com Account Instead”

Landingsite registers domains through Name.com. Instead of a registrar transfer, support can push the domain directly into your own Name.com account. This is worth asking about if:

  • the domain is still inside the 60-day transfer lock, or
  • your new registrar is Name.com anyway.

To do it:

  1. Create a free account at name.com.
  2. Verify the contact information on that account. If it is not verified, the push will fail.
  3. Find your Name.com account code in your account settings.
  4. Contact Landingsite support with that account code.

Once it lands in your account you have full control of the domain’s DNS, nameservers, and renewal settings. The expiration date does not change.

A registrar transfer is only necessary when you want a different company to hold the registration and bill you for renewals.

If you only need to:

  • add a TXT record for verification
  • add or update MX records for email
  • add other common DNS records

then you can do that from your domain settings page or by asking the AI editor — no transfer needed. See DNS Setup.

If you want a different DNS provider to answer for the domain but are happy to keep the registration here, change the nameservers instead. See Using Your Own Nameservers.

Domains purchased through Landingsite are registered through Name.com on your behalf. The domain is yours and is independent of your website subscription. If you cancel your hosting plan, you still own the domain.

Renewal billing is separate from your website plan, so it is worth checking your domain settings for the current expiration date and renewal status from time to time. Moving the domain to your own Name.com account does not reset the expiration date by itself — the domain keeps its existing renewal timeline unless the registrar explicitly shows a different renewal event.

Important: if a domain renewal fails and the domain stays expired long enough, it may eventually drop completely. At that point there is usually no special renewal link anymore — the domain has to be purchased again if it is still available.

However, if you need the domain registered directly in your name for legal or administrative reasons, we recommend purchasing the domain from an external registrar (like Namecheap or GoDaddy) and connecting it to your Landingsite site by pointing the nameservers.

These are two separate actions:

  • Website ownership transfer moves the Landingsite website into another person’s Landingsite account.
  • Domain transfer moves control of the domain registration, DNS, and future renewals.

If you receive a website ownership transfer email, use the same email address that received the invite:

  • if you already have a Landingsite account under that email, sign in and accept the transfer
  • if you do not have an account yet, create one first, then accept the transfer
  • if the website is on a paid plan, the transfer flow will ask for payment details before it can be completed
  • entering payment details there is normally for future renewals on the new owner’s account; it should not restart the current billing period or charge the same subscription a second time immediately just because the transfer happened mid-cycle
  • website ownership transfer changes who manages the Landingsite site and subscription, but it does not convert an older legacy HTML website into the newer React builder automatically

If you transfer a website to someone else, the domain’s yearly renewal does not automatically move with it.

If you want the new owner to control the domain and pay its future renewals too, transfer the domain separately — either to their own registrar using a transfer code, or to their Name.com account through support.

You cannot reveal a transfer code while an ownership transfer of the same domain to another Landingsite account is pending. Cancel or complete that first.

If you are leaving Landingsite entirely, keep in mind that domain transfer and website export are separate things. Moving the domain gives you control of the address, DNS, and nameservers, but it does not include a packaged export of the Landingsite-built website itself.

Your domain and your website subscription are independent:

  • Cancelling your website subscription does not cancel your domain.
  • Your domain renewal settings stay separate from your hosting status.
  • You can manage your domain through Landingsite even without an active website subscription.
  • A registrar transfer only moves control of the domain itself. Your Landingsite website subscription, content, and editor access stay separate.

If the domain stays pointed at the same Landingsite DNS after the transfer, the website can keep working normally. If you also change nameservers at the new registrar, expect an interruption until the domain is pointed back at the correct DNS.
